Please find below a press release from Secured by Design on the recent communal security door, door entry and access control system gift for charities promotion run by CAME KMS, Bamford Doors and Entrotec.

Not one but two community buildings that help protect young people in supported accommodation will benefit from a brand new communal security door, door entry and access control system, kindly donated by three Secured by Design (SBD) member companies.

The companie – F.Bamford (Engineering) Ltd, known in the industry as Bamford Doors, and its key partners CAME KMS and Entrotec Limited – were overwhelmed by the number of applications received for their Christmas competition.

The judging panel made up of representatives from the companies met just before the Christmas break to decide on the winner.

Heartened by the amount of great work going on in local communities across the country, the judging panel could not decide on one worthy cause. Instead, they decided that they would double up their charitable donation and have two winning projects rather than one to receive a complete communal door entry solution installed free to improve the security of their building.

The winners of this competition are:

A refuge for young parents in North Wales: providing shared accommodation for young, single parents facing a future alone with their child. The refuge is owned by North Wales Housing. Referred by their local authority, the tenants receive support to learn skills to live independently and provide for the needs of their child. They are likely to have come from housing where they were vulnerable, such as from abusive ex-partners or family members.

The existing communal door to the block of four flats can be opened easily or tends to be left open by visitors – making tenants feel insecure and at risk. Kerry Jones, of North Wales Housing, said: “Tenants don’t want to find visitors they aren’t expecting in the communal hallway. A new secure door will give them the added peace of mind of safety and security.

North Wales Housing is a social enterprise scheme providing homes and delivering services to more than 2,700 households across North Wales. They have become a regional market leader in vital areas such as assisting vulnerable people including the homeless and people with drug, alcohol and mental health problems.

Supported accommodation for young people who are homeless in North East England: providing safe accommodation for young people aged 16-21 affected by homelessness to prepare them for independent living. Most are likely to have endured trauma such as neglect or finding themselves homeless due to family breakdown.

Replacing the current door will revitalise the appearance of the building while also offering greater security to residents. Graeme Irwing, Riverside’s Area Manager of Care and Support, said: “We are delighted to be one of the winners of the competition which will make a big difference to the exterior of the building.

A new door will completely revive the appearance and improve its security. Together with the amazing work our staff do to help residents turn their lives around, it will help keep them more safe and secure.

Riverside is a leading social housing provider in England and Scotland with around 58,300 homes owned or under management. Its care and support services enable people facing a wide variety of challenging circumstances to lead more resilient and independent lives.

Alexis Smith, Managing Director, of Bamford Doors, who is leading on this charitable initiative for the three companies, said: “We have been thrilled and delighted by the huge response and have been so impressed by the amount of good work going on in communities around the UK. It’s so great to learn what people are doing to help those who are most vulnerable and at risk in our society,” she added.

All three companies are long-standing members of SBD, the official police security initiative.

Hazel Goss, Development Officer, SBD, said “This is a fantastic initiative. These companies have got together to give their time and money to help people most in need. I am really blown away by their generosity and their commitment to make a positive difference. It’s brilliant work. My many congratulations to the two winners and thrilled that one of the successful initiatives is in North Wales where I live!

About Secured by Design (SBD)
SBD is the official police security initiative. Owned by the UK Police Service, its specific aim is to reduce crime and help people live more safely.

SBD works closely with a network of Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs), who are either police officers or police staff based in police forces around the UK, who encourage and advise architects, developers and local authority planners to incorporate police crime prevention measures and principles into the physical security of developments and surrounding environment from initial concept and design through to construction and completion.

These developments are in a wide range of sectors including residential, education, health, sport and leisure as well as retail, commercial, business and industrial. For example, more than one million homes have been built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.

SBD seeks to improve the physical security of buildings using products, such as doors, windows, locks and walling systems that meet SBD’s Police Preferred Specification, which provides a recognised standard for all security products that can deter and reduce crime. SBD works with manufacturers and standards authorities to ensure that security standards are current and updated to keep pace with emerging crime trends.

There are currently many hundreds of companies producing thousands of attack resistant crime prevention products, across 30 different crime categories, which have achieved Police Preferred Specification. SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK.

In addition, SBD seeks to ensure its crime prevention principles are included into the layout and landscaping of new developments to maximise natural surveillance, limit excessive through movement and create defensible space – all with the aim of deterring and reducing crime.
